Statehood and Sixth Schedule: Wangchuk to Address Massive Public Gathering in Kargil on April 5th
Kargil, April 4, 2026 — The fight for Ladakh’s constitutional rights is set to echo through the mountains once again. Renowned environmentalist and activist Sonam Wangchuk is scheduled to address a massive public meeting in Kargil tomorrow, April 5, marking his first visit to the region since his highly publicized release from a Rajasthan prison.
The highly anticipated gathering will take place at 11:00 AM at Gandhi Park in Baru, Kargil, and is expected to draw immense crowds mirroring the overwhelming support he recently received in Leh.
A Rally of Gratitude and Demands
The primary purpose of tomorrow’s rally is a massive show of gratitude. Wangchuk is visiting to personally thank the residents of Kargil and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), who fiercely advocated for his release and took the fight all the way to New Delhi.
However, the political undercurrents of the rally remain strong. KDA leader Sajjad Kargili, who announced the event on Friday, confirmed that the public address will also heavily reinforce Ladakh’s ongoing core demands: full statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to protect the region’s fragile environment and tribal identity.
Out of Jail and Back in Action
Wangchuk’s return to Kargil comes after several turbulent and emotional months. The climate activist was arrested under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) following the violent protests that rocked Leh on September 24, 2025. He was subsequently shifted to Jodhpur jail, sparking nationwide outrage.
Following widespread pressure, the Central Government released him on March 14, 2026. After spending a few days in Delhi, Wangchuk finally returned to Leh on March 22, where he immediately addressed a massive public gathering. During his time in Leh, he also visited the grieving families of those who tragically lost their lives in the security force firings during the September protests.
Now, with the KDA heavily mobilizing supporters and urging citizens to turn out in large numbers at Gandhi Park tomorrow, Sonam Wangchuk is ready to reunite with the people of Kargil and reinvigorate the unified struggle for Ladakh’s future.
