Cooch Behar Police Crack Down on Illegal Weapons Ahead of Polls

Mekhliganj, April 6, 2026 — In a major breakthrough ahead of the upcoming elections, the Cooch Behar District Police successfully intercepted an arms-smuggling operation, seizing multiple illegal weapons and live ammunition. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the haul.

The successful operation was carried out based on specific, credible intelligence gathered by the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the Cooch Behar District Police.

Intercepted at Changrabandha Bypass

Acting on the tip-off, law enforcement set up a strict naka (checkpoint) at the Changrabandha Bypass point, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mekhliganj Police Station. During the routine checking, police intercepted a suspected vehicle traveling into the district from Maynaguri in the neighboring Jalpaiguri district.

Upon conducting a thorough search of the car, officers discovered a hidden cache of weapons meticulously concealed inside the vehicle’s dashboard.

The police recovered a total of 06 shutter arms (guns) and 20 rounds of live ammunition from the suspects’ possession.

Commitment to Violence-Free Elections

The two occupants of the vehicle, both identified as residents of the Dinhata area, were immediately detained at the scene and subsequently formally arrested. The illegal firearms, ammunition, and the vehicle used for transport have all been officially seized by the authorities.

A specific criminal case has been registered against the accused at the Mekhliganj Police Station under the relevant sections of the Arms Act and other applicable laws.

Highlighting the significance of the bust on social media, the Cooch Behar District Police stated that this successful seizure is a strong demonstration of their unwavering commitment to ensuring a peaceful, secure, and violence-free environment during the upcoming elections. Intensive vehicular checks and border monitoring continue across the district to prevent further illegal smuggling.
