“TMC is Killing Democracy”: BJP’s Raju Bista Alleges Brutal Attack on Party Workers in Chopra

Siliguri, March 29, 2026 — As the political temperature continues to rise in North Bengal ahead of the upcoming elections, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raju Bista has leveled serious allegations against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing them of orchestrating a violent, unprovoked attack on BJP workers in the Chopra region.

Taking to his official Facebook page to share a video of the aftermath, Bista launched a scathing attack on the state government, claiming that the incident is a clear indicator of how the TMC is “killing democracy in the state.”

The Incident at Kachakali, Chopra

According to the statement released by Bista, the clash occurred in the Kachakali, Chopra area, a historically volatile and politically sensitive pocket in North Bengal.

The BJP leader claimed that grassroots party workers (karyakartas) were peacefully engaged in putting up party flags when they were ambushed. “TMC goons brutally assaulted without any provocation and left [them] bleeding,” Bista stated in his post, highlighting the severe physical toll the alleged clash took on his party members.

A Warning to the Ruling Party

Bista’s social media statement was not just a condemnation of the violence but also served as a direct political warning to the Mamata Banerjee-led government. He accused the ruling party of utilizing intimidation tactics to suppress the opposition.

“Trinamool Congress thinks that they will continue to spread terror, and that the people will not retaliate,” the BJP leader wrote. “Times have changed, the days of TMC dictatorship are over.”

Appeal to the Election Commission

In response to the bloody confrontation, the BJP has officially escalated the matter to the highest electoral authority. Bista confirmed that the party has formally requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take immediate and due cognizance of the deteriorating situation in Chopra.

The BJP’s demands to the ECI include:

  • Swift intervention to ensure that the rule of law is established in the area.

  • The immediate arrest and imprisonment of the perpetrators involved in the assault.

  • The comprehensive removal of all “criminal elements” from the politically sensitive zone to ensure a free and fair democratic process.

A Brewing Political Storm

Chopra, located on the fringes of the Darjeeling and North Dinajpur districts, has frequently been a flashpoint for political violence between the TMC, BJP, and Left parties.

As of the time of publication, local TMC leadership has not yet issued an official response to Bista’s specific allegations regarding the Kachakali incident. However, this fresh eruption of violence underscores the fierce turf war currently playing out across North Bengal’s 54 highly contested assembly seats, setting the stage for an increasingly turbulent electoral season.
