A Legendary Premier League & Serie A Career
Alex Manninger carved out a highly successful and deeply respected career across Europe’s elite leagues, but he is perhaps best remembered by fans for his crucial role at Arsenal.
Joining the Gunners in 1997, he made history as the first Austrian player to feature in the Premier League. During the iconic 1997–98 season, Manninger stepped up to replace the injured David Seaman and delivered a string of spectacular, season-defining performances—including keeping six consecutive clean sheets. His heroics were instrumental in helping Arsène Wenger’s side secure the Premier League and FA Cup Double.
Over his spell in North London, he made 64 appearances before moving on to enjoy immense success in Italy. In Serie A, he notably played for Juventus, where he won a league title and served as a highly reliable deputy to Gianluigi Buffon. His extensive 22-year club career also included spells at Red Bull Salzburg, Siena, Udinese, Augsburg, and a final short-term stint at Liverpool before retiring in 2017.
On the international stage, Manninger earned 33 caps for the Austrian national team and proudly represented his country at the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament held on home soil.
