Chennai, February 19, 2026 — Bringing much-needed relief to their families, eleven Indian fishermen who were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy last year have safely returned home, arriving in Chennai following their release from a Sri Lankan prison.
The repatriated group consists of four fishermen from the Ramanathapuram district, while the remaining seven hail from the Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts of Tamil Nadu. Upon their arrival at the Chennai, they were officially received and processed by Indian immigration authorities before heading to their respective hometowns.
The fishermen were arrested in July last year when the Sri Lankan Navy accused them of trespassing and crossing into international waters. The apprehension of Indian fishermen remains a recurring issue in the Palk Strait, and their safe return marks a positive development for the coastal communities involved.
