Tesla Brings the 6-Seater Model Y to India Starting at ₹62 Lakh to Target Family SUV Market
New Delhi, April 22, 2026 — In a bid to capture the attention of premium SUV buyers and address sluggish initial sales, Tesla has officially launched a new six-seater variant of the Model Y in India. Starting at an introductory price of approximately ₹62 lakh (ex-showroom), the new electric crossover aims to offer genuine family-hauling capabilities with its expanded dimensions.
The “Model Y L” Advantage: More Space, Three Rows
The new variant, internally and globally recognized as the Model Y L (Long Wheelbase), was originally introduced in China last year. This marks the first major product intervention by the Elon Musk-led company since it officially entered the Indian market with the standard 5-seater Model Y in July 2025.
To accommodate a third row, Tesla has stretched the wheelbase of the standard platform by 150 mm, bringing the total length to nearly 4,976 mm. This allows for a comfortable and highly demanded 2+2+2 seating configuration. The extra cabin volume directly targets the buying preferences of Indian consumers in the ₹60–80 lakh SUV bracket, where three rows are heavily favored for extended families and sheer road presence.
Expected Specs and Features
While Tesla has not officially released the full India-specific spec sheet, the imported Model Y L is expected to carry forward the brand’s cutting-edge tech and performance DNA:
Powertrain & Range: The vehicle is likely to share its mechanics with the Long Range variant, featuring a heavy-duty battery pack (around 82 kWh). Even with the added weight of the extended chassis and extra seats, it is expected to deliver a highly competitive driving range exceeding 600 km on a single charge.
Interior & Comfort: The 6-seater will boast Tesla’s signature minimalist interior centered around a massive infotainment screen, a panoramic glass roof, and advanced driver assistance features. The second-row captain seats are expected to feature heating, ventilation, and powered armrests.
Performance: Acceleration from 0-100 kmph is estimated to remain incredibly brisk, clocking in at just under 6 seconds.
A Strategic Pivot for Tesla India
The introduction of the Model Y L represents a critical strategy shift for Tesla in India. Since launching the standard 5-seater Model Y in July 2025, the brand has struggled to gain significant traction. Hindered by exorbitant import tariffs on Completely Built Units (CBUs)—which range from 70% to 110%—and fierce competition from luxury rivals who locally assemble their EVs, Tesla managed to register fewer than 300 cars across the country last year.
Like its 5-seater sibling, the new 6-seater Model Y L will be imported directly from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, China, which is currently the only facility manufacturing this extended-wheelbase configuration.
By pivoting to a more spacious, family-oriented layout, Tesla hopes the Model Y L’s sheer utility and road presence will finally justify the steep CBU-driven price tag for the Indian luxury car buyer.
