Fake Weight-Loss Drug Racket Busted: ₹70 Lakh Mounjaro Scam in Gurugram Traced to China
Gurugram, April 22, 2026 — In a major crackdown on the pharmaceutical grey market, the Haryana Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Gurugram Police have unearthed a ₹70 lakh counterfeit drug racket manufacturing fake versions of the highly sought-after weight-loss injection, Mounjaro.
Investigators have discovered a deeply organized supply chain involving raw materials sourced from China, local assembly in a residential apartment, and a sophisticated online distribution network.
From Alibaba to a Gurugram Flat
According to the police, the prime accused—a 31-year-old BBA dropout residing in Sohna—masterminded the operation with an initial investment of just ₹2.5 lakh. The suspect allegedly sourced key raw materials, including peptides, directly from a Chinese company named “Yengli” via the online B2B platform Alibaba.com. Shipments worth nearly $5,000 were reportedly procured over the last two months.
Rather than a sterile laboratory, the accused had set up a makeshift manufacturing unit inside a residential apartment in Gurugram’s Sector 62. The racket procured around 2,000 vials of bacteriostatic water in bulk and spent roughly ₹70,000 to locally print counterfeit labels and packaging designed to perfectly mimic the authentic Italian-imported product.
Online Sales and Exorbitant Prices
Capitalizing on the massive global and domestic demand for weight-loss drugs, the gang utilized online wholesale platforms like IndiaMART to distribute their fake injections. The counterfeit Mounjaro vials were being sold to unsuspecting buyers at exorbitant prices ranging between ₹13,000 and ₹27,000 per injection.
“The accused had set up a makeshift manufacturing unit inside a residential apartment in Sector 62 and used basic equipment to assemble the injections,” said Amandeep Chauhan, Drug Control Officer of the FDA Haryana’s Gurugram wing. “Samples have been collected and sent for laboratory testing to determine composition and safety.”
The Bust and Arrests
The massive scam came to light on Saturday when a joint team of the FDA and local police intercepted a private vehicle in DLF Phase IV. The vehicle was found carrying suspected fake injections that had been sourced from Delhi’s infamous Bhagirath Market.
This interception led to the immediate arrest of two men, including an associate of the mastermind. Subsequent raids at the prime accused’s residence and the Sector 62 apartment resulted in the seizure of manufacturing equipment, Chinese raw materials, and large quantities of packaging supplies.
The prime accused, who previously sold Ayurvedic pain oils before entering the illegal pharma trade, is currently on a five-day police remand. His associate has been sent to judicial custody. Authorities confirmed that the suspects held absolutely no legitimate licenses to manufacture or distribute pharmaceutical drugs.
